Tropical Homes goes fishing 11-15-09
Tropical Homes of Flamingo Rica have a reputation for being one of the best rental home companies in the Guanacaste area. The owner Britta pictured here, went out fishing with me this past weekend hoping to find her first Marlin. We saw two a Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin. Dorado like this on here can really be caught in high numbers in November in Flamingo Costa Rica. Other fish that be caught in this area are Black Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Yellow Fin Tuna. Inshore there are a lot of Rooster fish being caught as well.
Sails Begin
Getting into November means more Sailfish! The water off Flamingo/Carrillo, Costa Rica cools down this time of year bringing in the Bonita, sardines, and ballyhoo. In turn brings in the Sailfish! Also it would not be surprising to raise Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, large Dorado, Yellow fin tuna, and Wahoo chasing this bait north as well. In Carrillo from mid December to April you can have up to 20 shots and these beautiful fish!
Costa Rica Saves Sail fish!!!!!
This is from the Tico Times of San Jose Costa Rica, this small report is a huge step in Costa Rican Sport fishing!!! Congrats to the people involved!!!!!!
Real Estate, Sailfish of Flamingo, Costa Rica
Working in an office as this real estate agent doesn't always mean your at the beach in Flamingo Costa Rica, he just needed some Sail Fish R&R. When we are in Carrillo all the office people and hotel workers come to play with these beautiful fish because here the bite is amazing from December to April with 20 fish days!!!!
Neighbors fishing for Roosterfish in Flamingo Costa Rica
My neighbor Drew brought some friends out on Mr . Trigger for a Rooster and this is what happened. That was number 5 off Flamingo, Costa Rica.
Giant Sailfish Goes French 11-19-09
This was one of the biggest Sailfish I have ever seen weighing way over 180lbs. Sail’s like this one frequent these waters close in and in numbers this time of year because of the baby and large Dorado run. The Sailfish feed off the small Dorado while there cousins the Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, and Strip Marlin feed off the larger Dorado. Other fish that can be caught off Flamingo, Costa Rica are Wahoo, yellow fin tuna, and large Roosterfish this time of year. This new friend of mine got his hands full with this one and myself well I had to jump in with this monster. A common thing for the Capt. Jason “Mr. Trigger” Coffrin to do with a large Sailfish or Blue Marlin, Black Marlin or Stripe Marlin.
Stripe Marlin
Another day on the water with people from Sarasota Fl, fishing the waters of Flamingo/ Carrillo Costa Rica.
Marlin in the Air
Marlin like this 450lb Black Marlin frequent, the water off Flamingo, Costa Rica most of the year but, this time of year is the best for big Black Marlin, Blue Marlin and Stripe Marlin. The reason is the abundance of Bonita and very small Dorado in the area, a key food source for these huge predators, many of our Marlin caught by a bait and switch system. Where they are teased up and then bait is shown to them for the hookup. Other fish that can be caught off Flamingo, Costa Rica are Dorado, Yellow fin tuna, Sailfish, and Wahoo.

Wahoo Mania
This Wahoo was taken off the Catalina islands on a surface plug. It weighs about 63 pounds and was caught on 20lb tackle by a special long time client Manny pictured here with me. Wahoo like this one are a common thing for Mr. Trigger and crew off Flamingo and Carrillo Costa Rica. These fish are caught high speed trolling or slow speed with live bait. Good time to try for these fish is from August to November.
Blue Afternoon
This Blue Marlin was caught tagged and released using the bait and switch style we love at Mr Trigger Sportfishing in Carrillo/Flamingo Costa Rica.
Big Black vs. Trigger 11-25-09
This extremely large Black Marlin was caught in 2000 feet of water off Flamingo Costa Rica. In November large Marlin can be caught because of the amount of bonito and Dorado in the area a favorite food for the large predator of the sea. This one came up on a lure turned teaser of mine the Evelio my first mate loves in our bag of tricks. It hit my shotgun bait on the center rigger on a naked ballyhoo. He weighed in at 486 lbs and was released unharmed to swim the beautiful waters off Flamingo/Carrillo Costa Rica again. Other Marlin like Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin can be caught this time of year as well as Yellow fin tuna, Sailfish, Rooster fish, and big snapper. Come on down and take a trip with us you will not forget it!!!!!!!!!

Claudia Bike rentals goes Sailing
I got a tour last week taking Claudia Hladik- Hentschel owner and operator of Claudia’s Bike and tour rentals in Flamingo Costa Rica .If you are interested in any kind of tour in Costa Rica and you are in the area of Flamingo this is a great person to contact. I have been really blessed to be able to take out almost every owner of Hotels, Restaurants, and Tour Companies in the area and here again we had a great half day catching an abundance of really small dorado and this huge Sailfish. Being Claudia’s first trip on the boat and a Sailfish at this size really makes it a great trip. Along with her was her parents and a friend and client of both of us. Hope to see Claudia again soon!! Other fish that can be caught off the Flamingo coast are Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Yellow Fin Tuna, Dorado, and Wahoo. Inshore there are some huge Roosterfish to be caught as well!
Bottom Fishing! 11-25-09
This day was amazing. This woman is over 70 years old and has been fishing her whole life in Texas never did she think a fish like this Amber Jack could pull this hard in 140 feet of water. An avid crappie fisherman her whole life she knows fishing well but, “this one pulls” she said after landing the 56 pound Amber Jack. “ ahahahah I just laughed” yea they are a hard fighting fish. When the winds permit us from doing our Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, or large Yellow fin Tuna and even Roosterfish we often do the bottom fishing thing. (WE DO IT ALL) With this sport fishing team we need to do it all says Jason & Evelio because you never know what the weather is going to do even though it’s almost always beautiful in sunny Flamingo, Costa Rica.
Black pitch Bait Style
Black Marlin 300-350 lbs jumping at the boat 45min later it was released, caught on a ballyhoo pitch bait
Sail fish that Changed the Bizzz
The reason this fish changed our business and the way we marlin fish was it was caught on another boat Jason Mr Trigger Coffrin was running that day. We took a larger group on a larger boat and I realized I could catch fish my way in any one of these boats so the Trigger is now up for sale and the new one is on its way to Flamingo Costa Rica and first time in Carrillo/Samara Costa Rica 2011
Blue Marlin nose job!
This was by far the most exciting fight with a fish I have ever endured! This 400lb Blue Marlin was a master at alluding its predators!! We chased this fish all over the ocean and on its final attempt at getting away it came at us at full speed putting his bill 6in into the tuna tube on the transom of my boat witch is 3/4in thick PVC pipe. It was amazing! When he broke free he left 6 inches of his bill behind as a fare well. I think we will see him again!!!
October Dorado on Fire
This is a good friend of mine Chris Carter with a serious 50lb October Dorado! Along the Flamingo coast in October it rains a lot in the morning and night and there are lots of trees and other floating objects offshore that become great feeding areas for these large Dorado. Flamingo, located on the North West pacific side of Costa Rica has a rich source of fishing during the rainy season. Along with Dorado brings the giant Blue Marlin and Black Marlin that feed on them like some of these posted through out the site. Don't let the term rainy season fool you there are still lots of giant fish to catch!
Brent and Wahoo
Well an eventful day came about when two Blue Marlin came into the spread and chased the teasers but swam away, then later in the day Brent Adams caught some sushi I mean a 30lb Wahoo of the Catlina islands. The Catalina's are located about 5 miles off Flamingo Costa Rica which is located on the North Pacific side of the country.
Tuna Time!!
Well the rest of the pack in Tamarindo, Flamingo, and Coco chased 20-30 pound Tuna we at Mr trigger Sport Fishing raised the bar once more going two for two on these 100 pound plus monster Yellow Fin Tuna. In Flamingo Costa Rica we have an abundance of these Yellow Fin tuna this time of year, and in Carrillo/Samara you can catch these monsters January through March with us.
Spaniards 08-25-2009
I had a lot of fun with this couple from Spain last Tuesday! Juan doing all of the fishing landed an impressive 5 for 7 Sailfish and one nice Dorado on a full day with us. I really enjoy have people that have never caught or seen fish like these. After Juan reeled in his second he realized with our great staff anyone can come down and catch these guys. I hope to see him in the near future!! The Sailfish where caught on live bait and frozen ballyhoo 20 to 30 miles off Flamingo, Costa Rica
Father and Son's
At Mr. Trigger Sport Fishing we invite all who want to see the great game fish Flamingo, Costa Rica have to offer. In this case we took a family of Mark on the left and his three son’s Mathew, Jack and Sam. Mathew pictured here helped dad reel in this nice 20lb Amber Jack a couple of days ago.
Marlin Action
Carrillo/ Flamingo Costa Rica Sportfishing highlight videos from the first week in Carrillo Costa Rica, we are in Carrillo for bill fish season from January - April
Marlin Report
Blue Marlin like this one, Black Marlin, and Striped Marlin are very common in the waters off the coast of Flamingo, Costa Rica which is located on the North West Pacific side of the country. These Marlin are caught by trolling rigged ballyhoo on circle hooks or slow trolling live bait like Bonita, Yellow Fin tuna, Dorado or Skip Jack. The diet of these Marlin is wide spread with everything from Spiny Lobster to small Mammal dolphin. These Marlin in these waters can reach to 1000 pounds in the Blue Marlin and Black Marlin species. The Stripe Marlin gets in the 400 pound rang. Even then this is an awesome fish to see jump 10 to 15 feet in the air like this one shown here did before it was released to fight another day.
Sail fish Season
This is a video of how to correctly catch and release a bill fish. Our season in Guanacaste are January - April in Carrillo/Samara Costa Rica and in the later months in beautiful Flamingo/Tamarindo/Papaguyo Costa Rica
