Roosterfish
Fishable year round, but by far the Quepos area is the best place to fish them, with April, June - Sept being the best months. This is where I lived in Costa Rica, and it's beautiful with a marine topography that attracts this fish. They're normally caught at a depth of 15 to 18m or 50 to 60ft for you gringos. Catching a giant rooster is an incredible Costa Rica fishing experience.
Marlin
Fishable year round, though the very best is from the middle of November to the beginning of March and through August and September. Definitely a memorable Costa Rica fishing experience. There are several types of Marlin in Costa Rica. The Stripe Marlin is the smallest but I think its the hardest to hook with its quick leaps and rappid speed towards the boats really challenges anglers skills. The Blue Marlin they say is the biggest out there weighing over 2000 lbs I think can be the hardest to get to bite because they seem very picky at times and then there size at over 1000 lbs can be a challenge as well! The Black Marlin Mr Trigger's favorite is the hardest fish to fight in the sea. Ask the best Captains of the sea and most will agree. At over 1000 lbs they have a unique peck fin design with fixed peck fins for dives down after being hooked at 80 mps and reel screaming adventure. Most fish win the battle but at Mr Trigger if you ask for a Black we will put you on the bite for sure. A true monster of the sea. Also our logo is the man in the black suit.
Sailfish
Fishable year round, but December - April are tops. The slow period is normally August to November. In the high times you can get 10 to 20 shots at this really hard to hook fish on spinning,convintinal or Fly fishing gear.There size in Costa Rica is the biggest in the world reaching over 100 lbs and still have that amazing ability to jump through the entire fight.
Wahoo / Ono
They get active around the rainy season like Dorado, which starts around the middle of May and their activity climaxes between July and August. By and large they are caught near rocky marine topography points of land and islands, though once and a while you will encounter one further out, more offshore.
Dorado / Mahi Mahi / Dolphin Fish (depending where you're from ;-)
Best months are May to the end of Ocober, during rainy season when the rivers are flooding (remember to have a 4x4 if you're driving around much in during this season!) The roads to Marina Pez Vela are very nice I have a small truck and it works out fine!
Tuna
Fishable all year, but your best bet lays between August and October. Sizes range from about 10lbs/5kgs up to the occasional monster trophy fish of 200 plus pounds!
Marina Pez Vela Quepos is by far the best location in Costa Rica! We are just 1 1/2 from San Jose air port and even have our own airport to do the puddle jump (check out nature air) and the fishing is insane!! With the winds never really getting bad like up north we now stay here all year unless asked other wise by a client. I do enjoy Marlin fishing June - September in Papaguyo. The night life around Manuel Antonio and Quepos can't be beat!!
